The election results did not tally as I had hoped, but I am thankful just the same for having had the opportunity to try and for the many things, I learned along the way.

First, I am thankful for you, my friends and supporters. I would like to thank each of you for your help and support during my county commissioner campaign. Each of you gave uniquely of your time, treasures, and talents, and all is greatly appreciated.

Second, I would like to thank my family for their support; Doug for his unwavering commitment, Ben for his faith, Kim for her determination and courage, and Sarah for her sacrifices. I am so blessed to have them.

And last but not least, I would like to thank the voters of Lucas County who supported me. Thank you all and God bless.

Primary Election Day

It’s a special day for our family. Today my daughter Kim, who turned 18 this past December, voted for the first time. I’m so proud of her!

I am asking all Lucas County voters to join Kim in voting in this primary election day. And I’m asking Republicans to vote for me, Pam Haynam for Lucas County Commissioner.

I offer Republicans a clear choice.

I believe to bring more jobs to Lucas County, we need to do three things:

First, we need to create a better business environment by lowering taxes and limiting government. I will pledge not to raise taxes without a vote of the people.

Second, I believe we need to do a better job with regional cooperation and promotion. As a suburban resident, I will be a credible voice selling Lucas County to the rest of Ohio, the nation and the world. I pledge to work with all local governments to promote Lucas County to businesses everywhere.

Third, as a Board of Education member I have long understood that quality schools are our best economic development tool. As Commissioner I pledge to work with schools on a grow our own approach, to do a better job of teaching our children about developing and growing a business.

I would be honored to serve you as your next Lucas County commissioner! And I pledge I will serve all four years of my term.

Debate Demonstrates Pam's Republican Strength

For those of you who missed the debate on Tuesday, you can see the Blade's report and connect to the four part video of the debate by clicking here. As I've said before, I'm not a polished debater, but I think the debate did a great job of demonstrating that I'm the only Republican candidate for Lucas County Commissioner who is prepared to stand up to the two Democrat former Toledo City Councilmen who are now on the Commissioners. My opponent, who has served with both Commissioners on City Council is ready to roll over and be an insignificant third voice. He not only couldn't think of a single instance in which he would have voted differently than the current commissioners, he even said he would have voted for the budget-busting budgets that the existing commissioners adopted over Maggie Thurber's no votes. Don't misconstrue my position: I'm prepared to work with the two existing Commissioners. But I'm also prepared to stand up for Republican principals when its needed. As a number of Republican voters have noted, if you want a third commissioner whose goal is just to get along with the other two Democrats, why not vote for a Democrat. I provide Republicans with a real choice and will stand up for you and what you believe as your Lucas County Commissioner.

Growing Our Own Businesses

As a candidate for Lucas County Commissioner I believe that the top 3 concerns for Lucas County are jobs, jobs, and jobs. As a small business owner and experienced public servant, I understand that government does not create jobs: businesses create jobs. However, I believe it is the responsibility of our County Commissioners to create a favorable business environment by limiting government and lowering taxes, and that businesses, with the appropriate cooperation and promotion by the Commissioners, will come here to thrive and grow.

A favorable business environment in Lucas County would encourage and permit existing businesses to expand and attract new businesses. With lower taxes, new business ventures would have a greater chance of creating jobs and prospering. A more favorable business climate certainly would affect both large and small business, but with 85% of businesses being smaller local operations, it is particularly necessary for smaller businesses to thrive and create more employment opportunities.

As a small business owner, I know that establishing a successful business largely hinges on having a great idea for a new business. I also understand that making and keeping that business successful depends on having the business knowledge to make good business decisions.

As a Board of Education member for the last nine years in Sylvania, I understand the connection between having knowledge and applying it in the real world. That is why I have supported and promoted the establishment of an entrepreneurial program in Sylvania Schools. With the help of the Regional Growth Partnership and private funding this program uses community volunteers and teachers to educate high school students on how to develop and grow their own businesses. Students actually plan, develop and run their own business. This tool helps students understand first-hand what it takes to “grow their own business”. Long term, this program will help create more businesses and jobs in Lucas County!

As your County Commissioner, I pledge to work with our schools to help expand and spread this program and help “Grow Our Own Businesses.”

A Three Part Plan for Jobs

As a candidate for county commissioner, I believe that the top 3 concerns facing Lucas County are jobs, jobs and jobs. To create more jobs in Lucas County we must do at least three things better.

As a suburban resident, I would be a credible voice to expand cooperation between Toledo and the suburbs to cooperatively sell Lucas County to the rest of Ohio, the nation and the world. As your Commissioner, I pledge to work with all local governments, labor and business to promote Lucas County.

Third, as a school board member, I have long understood that quality schools are our best economic development tool. It has worked in Sylvania! As your County Commissioner I would work with our schools to develop a “Grow Our Own” approach, to do a better job teaching our children how to develop and grow their own businesses. This emulates the proverb, if you give a man a fish you feed him for a day, but if you teach a man to fish you feed him for a lifetime. We need to teach our children how to grow their own businesses!

This is not a glitzy or showy plan, just an internal, external and long term approach to our concerns about bringing more jobs to Lucas County.

Haynam Leads Fundraising Among Republicans

I want to thank again all those of my supporters who have invested in my campaign, and for making me the top fundraiser among Lucas County Republicans. The Blade reports that I lead my opponent in fundraising as reported in pre-primary finance reports. I also lead long-time veteran Auditor, Larry Kaczala, in fundraising for the period.

Now, I understand that money alone doesn’t win elections, but our success in raising money is another demonstration that I am the strongest candidate that Lucas County Republicans can field for the tough November election ahead. While I believe my focus on job creation by creating a more business friendly County through smaller government and lower taxes will put me over the top in November, I think I have also demonstrated the ability to raise the funds I will need to get my message out.

Haynam inspires City of Toledo assessment study

Stung by my criticism of the City of Toledo 36% increase in special assessments over the last five years, Mayor Carty Finkbeiner and City Council have appointed a task force to examine the rising cost of special assessments. Last month, as chair of city council’s finance committee, my opponent imposed a 4.4 million dollar tax increase on residents of the city of Toledo by increasing special assessments. During my opponents tenure on council he has supported increased assessments totaling 10.7 million dollars. He has also opposed submitting proposed assessment increases to the voters.

According to Blade reports, the Mayor and council reacted to my opposition to those increases by appointing a task force. Of course council and the mayor could have rejected the increases in the first place, or repealed the assessments. Instead, they chose to leave the tax increase intact in favor of a “do nothing” study.

I pledge as County Commissioner not to permit any increase in taxes on residents of Lucas County without submitting the issue to the voters. That is a position my opponent has refused to endorse.

I Love My Zoo (Just the Way It Is)

Lucas County already has 14.85 mills of countywide property taxes. This contributes to our high tax rate and serves as a deterrent to businesses creating and retaining jobs in Lucas County.

Concerning the zoo levies, issues 3 and 4 on the May 2 ballot: I have been a long time supporter and member of the zoo. I have enjoyed visiting the zoo with my family. In addition, I have never hesitated before in my support for the zoo.

I intend to support the operating levy (Issue 4), a replacement levy, because I understand the need to maintain this important community asset and recognize there have been normal cost increases for animal care and food, healthcare costs, and utility costs. The Toledo Zoo is a community treasure and adds to the economy and quality of life of our community. To its credit, the Zoo Board has addressed its problems, and the zoo has earned our support for its continued operation.

I do not intend to support the capital zoo levy (Issue 3), which is a new tax. I do not think Lucas County can afford to expand the zoo at the expense of increasing our already high countywide property tax rate. That tax increase would be a deterrent to new businesses locating here. This is consistent with my belief that to attract and retain businesses we need to create a business friendly environment in Lucas County and to do that we need to limit government spending and lower taxes.

The bottom line is: I love my zoo, just the way it is.

Sarantou Votes to Raise Toledo Taxes Again, Votes Against Law Enforcement

My opponent in the May 2nd primary again demonstrated that I am the only Real Republican in this primary race by voting to increase Toledo's special assessments and to cut the funding for the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council. Sarantou again supported an increase in special assessments for Toledo residents, the next in a long line of votes supporting a 36 per cent in special assessment taxes during his time on Council. Special assessments are a hidden method of increasing taxes, with Toledo City Council unilaterally increasing Toledo residents' taxes without a vote of the electorate. The special assessment monies will be used to expand Toledo's government by adding new employees to perform the basic city functions of street and alley cleaning, snow and leaf removal, tree trimming and street lighting. Even democrats on Toledo's City Council opposed this tax increase and urged Sarantou and the Mayor to find the money elsewhere in the $235 million dollar budget.

Government has to make choices, and the easy choice is to always do more and tax more. There is no end to the good work that government can do, but we can't afford the taxes to do everything. Taxes kill business development! Government needs to set priorities, do those essential tasks that government must do, and decide what it will and won't do. The tough decisions are the ones to hold the line on taxes and select the things that will get done, as well as what won't. My opponent doesn 't get it. I do.

At the same time Sarantou decided to cut the City's funding for the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council over the objection of the Chief Judge of the Toledo Municipal Court, Republican Judge Gene Zamuda. The CJCC provides the technical

Hi bloggers! My name is Pam Haynam and I am a mom on a mission. I am running for Lucas County Commissioner because I want my children, all of our children, friends and neighbors too, to have job opportunities in Lucas County. Nine years ago when I first was first elected to the Sylvania Board of Education, I ran because I want to get involved with my children’s, all of our children’s educations. During the past nine years on the school board, I have gained the reputation and the record as a fiscally responsible public servant. However, my children are growing up and are on the verge of entering the workforce. As a Republican candidate for Lucas County Commissioner in the May 2 primary election, I believe the top issue facing Lucas County is jobs, jobs, jobs. Unfortunately, a recent study showed, Lucas County ranking 196th out of 200 metropolitan areas in the United States, in the category of job creation and retention. As a small business owner, with 28 years of business experience in both large companies and as an experienced public servant, I understand that the county commissioners do not create jobs: businesses create jobs. But, it is the responsibility of the county commissioners to create a favorable climate for business in Lucas county. As a true Republican, I believe that to do this we must limit government spending and reduce taxes.

Over the next couple of weeks before the primary, I hope to use this blog to share my views as a candidate for Lucas County Commissioner. On May 2, I hope to have your support to vote for Pam Haynam, the real Republican!
